The Concept

Competition Training

PGLaps offers targeted and short training tasks taking typically less than 15min. It is suited for paragliding competition pilots but also those who are just looking for a set activity to complete while at your local flying site.

The tasks will challenge you with

  • Being at an air start cylinder on time
  • Pushing bar hard (scoring is time based)
  • Turning efficiently and precise at turnpoints
  • Avoiding airspace diligently
Other elements we felt were important were:
  • Have a fast pace of challenges for efficient practice (i.e. repetition)
  • Have the ability to measure improvement
  • Separate focus on gliding/racing vs. climbing
  • Comparability across sites

Turns out, spectator and comp training requirements are fulfilled by very similar criteria, which helped shape the initial draft for our short circuit requirements.

Spectator Friendly

To increase the attractiveness of Paragliding for spectators a few aspects are important:

  • Fast paced action
  • Small flying arena that can be seen from launch
  • Limited race duration
  • 1-on-1 competitions (“Dog fight”)

Fun!

There are no limits to the type of tasks that could be set. Some ideas:

  • Simple 1km out and return. Which pilot on which glider is the fastest?
  • Flying through a canyon. No limit to setting up custom airspace as required.
  • Up & Down. Climbing challenge over airspace followed by spiraling down.

Mini Task v01 - The Starter

Looking to fulfil the criteria listed above the following image represents the first version of a Lap Racing Task. All necessary files to replicate this at your local flying site are accessible under Downloads. Please follow our Lap Task Setup Guide

If you want to design an alternative lap task, you can find a design assistant pack under Downloads.

Key features of MiniTask v01 – The Starter:

  • All mandatory turning angles implemented for both right- and left-hand turns.
  • Different waypoint sizes from 25m to 700m to train for precision
  • Airspace features: Wall to fly above, avoid airspace on right, avoid airspace on left, fly under airspace, fly along airspace.
